Which businesses in Texas is general liability insurance coverage important for?
General liability insurance coverage is something that almost every Texas business should consider. This is one insurance that’s not limited to businesses of a certain size or in a certain industry. The vast majority of businesses could face a “slip and fall” lawsuit, defamation allegations, or other events that general liability might protect against.
Typical Coverages
What particular protections does general liability insurance coverage provide?
General liability insurance coverage is often comprised of several distinct protections. Some protections that might be available include:
- Bodily Injury Coverage: May apply to common accidents that result in injuries to a third party. Protection might apply only at a business’s premises, or extend to other places.
- Premises Liability Coverage: May apply to common accidents resulting in third-party injury, but only at a business’s premises.
- Property Damage Coverage: May apply to common accidents that result in damage to a third party’s property. Protection might apply only at a business’s premises, or extend to other places.
- Personal and Advertising Injury Coverage: May apply to defamation lawsuits, and lawsuits alleging harmful advertising practices.
An insurance agent who knows general liability well can explain these, and any other protections a policy offers, in greater detail.
Does general liability cover auto accidents?
General liability normally doesn’t apply to auto accidents, which instead usually require a commercial auto insurance policy. The common accidents that general liability might cover include things like trips, slips, and falls rather than auto accidents.
Does general liability cover common accidents if they involve an inebriated customer?
Any protections against common accidents that general liability provides typically presume that the injured party isn’t intoxicated. Most general liability policies exclude trips, slips, and falls when the injured is inebriated. For these situations, businesses that serve alcohol may need liquor liability insurance.
Liquor liability can usually be bundled with general liability, as well as commercial auto and other many other coverages.
What is a certificate of insurance?
A certificate of insurance (COI) is a document that shows the state insurance coverage(s) are in place. Businesses are sometimes requested by customers to furnish a COI, especially if working in construction, the trades, or a similar field.
Obtaining a COI is an easy process when working with a knowledgeable insurance agent. An agent can request and obtain the document, often either as a digital or hard copy.
Is general liability coverage legally required?
In most cases, businesses aren’t required by law to carry general liability coverage. Some businesses might be required per the terms of a contract to have coverage, however, and it’s broadly recommended regardless.
If a contract requires coverage, a knowledgeable agent can help businesses find coverage that meets the contract’s requirements. The business can likely then provide a COI to show that adequate protection is in place.
What is an “additional insured?”
An additional insured is another party that might file a claim against the insurance policy on which they’re listed. They aren’t the policyholder, but they may be entitled to all or some of a policy’s protections.
Some contracts require a business to list the contracted party as an additional insured. This, too, is something an experienced agent can take care of.
